Andrew Wiggins (Huntington Prep, Huntington, W.Va.) and Jabari Parker (Simeon Career Academy, Chicago, Ill.) highlight this year’s Naismith Boy’s High School Player of the Year Early Season Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today.

ATLANTA (Dec. 14, 2012) – Andrew Wiggins (Huntington Prep, Huntington, W.Va.) and Jabari Parker (Simeon Career Academy, Chicago, Ill.) highlight this year’s Naismith Boy’s High School Player of the Year Early Season Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. The list also features twin brother standouts and University of Kentucky commits, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, who are positioning themselves as viable candidates for the top high school basketball award. The list features the top high school basketball talent from around the nation expected to make a run for the 2013 Naismith Trophy.

The candidates were selected by basketball journalists from around the country, who form the Naismith Awards national high school voting academy. The selections were based on player performances last season and expectations for the 2012-2013 campaign.  One male will ultimately be selected as winner, and he will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Naismith Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Atlanta.

“The Boy’s Naismith High School Player of the Year award has a great history and many former award winners have gone on to have outstanding college and NBA careers,” said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “We look forward to following each young man’s season this year as they compete to earn the right to be called the best boys high school basketball player in 2013.”

The Naismith Boy’s High School Player of the Year award was first presented in 1987 to Dennis Scott of Flint Hill Prep (Oakton, Va.), who later starred at Georgia Tech and with the Orlando Magic in the NBA. Other notable winners include Jason Kidd (1992, St. Joseph Notre Dame High School, Alameda, Calif.), Kobe Bryant (1996, Lower Merion High School, Ardmore, Pa.), LeBron James (2003, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron, Ohio) and Derrick Favors (2009, South Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Ga.).  Last year’s boy’s winner was Shabazz Muhammad (Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas, Nev.) who is now playing at UCLA.
