Atlanta Tipoff Club Announces 2007 Metro Atlanta Basketball Award Winners
Chris Allen and Kelley Cain Named Players of the Year
ATLANTA
(March 28, 2007) – With
the completion of the 2006-07 high school basketball season, the Atlanta Tipoff
Club today announced its winners for the Metro Atlanta Basketball Awards. The
winners will be recognized at the Tipoff Club’s Naismith Awards Banquet
presented by Delta Air Lines on April 5 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
“The
competitive landscape of high school basketball is at an all-time high, and Atlanta is right at the top in terms of talent,” said Gary Stokan, Atlanta Tipoff Club
president. “This year’s award winners are all very deserving and would fare
quite well against the rest of the nation.”
Awards
announced were as follows:
Metro Atlanta Boys’ High School Player of the Year: Chris Allen, Meadowcreek High School.
Averaged
27.2 points, 4.8 assists, 7.2 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game. Allen led the
Mustangs to a school record 26-3 mark and their second consecutive region
championship. He has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Michigan State University.
Metro Atlanta Girls’ High School Player of the Year: Kelley Cain, St. Pius X High School.
Averaged 18
points, 2 assists, 11 rebounds and 2 steals per game. Cain sparked the Lady
Golden Lions to a 30-3 record and a 4A state championship. She has signed a
letter of intent to play basketball at Tennessee.

Garland Pinholster Metro Atlanta Boys’ High
School Coach of the Year:
James
Hartry, Tucker High School; in his seventh season as head coach of the Tigers,
he led the team to a class 4A state championship. This year’s 31-2 record
culminated a three-year run of 89 wins against just 9 defeats.
Garland Pinholster Metro Atlanta Girls’
High School Coach of the Year:
Stephanie
Dunn, St.Piux X High School; led the Golden Lions to a 30-3 record and third state
championship in four years this past season and has amassed a 147-15 record in
five years.
Bob
Eskew Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for Metro Atlanta: Marist High School
Charlie
Bloodworth Metro Atlanta Officials of the Year:
Kevin Self: A Georgia High School Association official for
nine years, he has been Secretary of Multi-County Basketball Officials
Association for five years and has been to the Georgia high School Association
(GHSA) state tournament for the past four. Self also officiates at the college
level in a number of conferences including the Big South, Ohio Valley and Atlantic Sun.
Patrick
Graham: The 2006-2007 Georgia High School Referee of the Year, he has worked
the Georgia state tournament for the past five years, including the Final 4
from 2004-2006. In addition to his position as referee, Graham is the assigner
of officials for the Capital City Officials Association and also is a trainer
for football, basketball and baseball officials.

Tipoff Club, an Atlanta Sports Council property, is committed to promoting the
game of basketball and recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of those who
make the game so exciting. The Atlanta Tipoff Club has presented the Naismith
Trophy since UCLA’s Lew Alcindor first won the award in 1969.
The
Naismith Awards program has become an emblem of excellence for the game,
recognizing the men’s and women’s college players, coaches and officials of the
year, and the male and female high school players of the year.
